This is the clever builder. I can tell this is a very old picture because I look even worse than that now and I quit building the stem fat down on the water a long time ago. Notice the slack bilges and narrow waterline. Also notice the jackleg rig. We always have to sail a boat before letting a customer take delivery. Now I insist that I have the real sail for it first but we used to use all this collection of junk. Though the mast is our usual hollow octagonal style (tapered both in diameter and wall thickness. This one weighs less than a pound) the other spars are bamboo (hard to beat). The sail itself is made out of polyester drapery backing... cheap and easy to sew. Sails made like that get to looking like a rump-sprung skirt pretty quick.
